Two weeks ago I took a day off from work to spend a day at the range to sight in my center fire Henry rifles. Both the .44 Magnum and the .357 Magnum now have peep sights installed, but the rifles were never adequately sighted in. Now they're shooting great, so today was the day to dial in the Henry rimfires. I spent this afternoon at Dirk's club sighting in the H001T .22LR Octagon Frontier Model with iron sights, and the Henry AR-7 at around 25 feet for close range squirrel hunting... MORE

FLITZ Gun Care Products
Some time ago Henry Repeating Arms suggested that I use FLITZ polish to clean my Big Boy rifles, so I contacted the company and they sent me some samples. Here's my first impressions.
This is my Big Boy .357 Magnum before using FLITZ. The brass is clean, but it has been getting dull and in areas is looking dark, showing signs of oxidation. To tell you the truth, I don't really mind that look because it gives the rifle a historic look. But let's see how well this brass can polish up.
Here's the AFTER photo. I think this is amazing! This rifle didn't look this good when it was new. I actually never thought a finish like this was possible with this type of brass. The Golden Boy rifles have a finish like this, but never the Big Boys until today. The polishing cloth turned black with the oxidation that was removed from the receiver. Cleaning time was a few minutes.
This is the microfiber polishing cloth. It's lint free and machine washable.
The unopened package, which contains the polishing cloth on the back side, 'Metal, Plastic and Fiberglass Polish', 'Rifle/Gun & Knife Knife Wax', and 'Gun & Knife Cleaner'.
- Gun & Knife Cleaner: For stainless steel and nickle firearms. I'll be using this on the Ruger SP101 and the NAA mini-revolvers.
- Metal, Plastic and Fiberglass Polish: Removes rust, fingerprints and powder residue. Safe on bluing, nickle, stainless and stocks. This is what I used to clean the Henry brass.
- Rifle/Gun & Knife Wax: Brazilian Carnauba & Bees Wax. No silicone. Non-abrasive. No buildup.
I posted these photos on the BRShooting Journal's facebook group and within minutes I received a comment that said: "Been using Flitz for a long time, good stuff." I agree and I think you will as well.
For more information, contact: info@flitz.com / www.flitz.com
A final note from a member of the BRShooting Journal facebook group:
"I contacted Henry some time ago about a brass polish for both my rifles Bob. One of the technical staff said it's ok to use Flitz on the big Boy but not the Golden Boy because it would ruin the finish. Just thought I'd mention this for your readers that own a Golden Boy."I will be contracting both Henry and FLITZ about this and I'll post the responses.
BobGood day I would use the Flitz Rifle & Gun wax on that type of gun. Bob it is safe on all guns the wax. The reason is that the gold on the gun may damage or come off. The polish is great for nickel & brass & also stainless steel. Please see the u-tube demos on our web site for more information. Have a nice day.Regards,Flitz International,Ltd., Lisa K. Brucato, Territory Manager
I'm not sure I understand that answer??? You will understand this one...
Never said to use on Golden Boys. No polish can be used on Golden Boys. Only on Big Boys – use Flitz Metal Polish, Peek Metal Polish or Lucas Metal Polish. Do not use Brasso. The Golden Boys have a Brasslight plating with a protective coating and you only need to wipe down with cotton cloth or cotton cloth with something like Breakfree.Sincerely,Anthony ImperatoPresident, Henry Repeating ArmsPS: You can also use Nevr Dull on the Big Boys

Last weekend I went scouting coyotes with my Ruger SingleSix 17HMR in a Triple-K holster. This holster distributes the revolver's weight so nicely that I sometimes find myself touching the grip to be sure it's still there.
I did see coyote scat along the path, so I think I'll set up a blind next month to see if I can call some dogs in. Last winter I heard what sounded like a pack of yotes howling right across from my primary squirrel hunting area at about 7am. I have a feeling they are a major reason for the decline in the squirrel population in recent years, so it will be a pleasure to take some of them out.

Mounting a scope on a Henry Big Boy rifle
I asked Anthony Imperato if he had any suggestions on mounting a scope on a Henry Big Boy rifle. He sent this response:
I just found the following info on Henry's website:
To optimize accuracy, Henry Scope Mounts are available for all Henry H004 series Golden Boy, H006 series Big Boy and H005 Mini Bolt models. Each of these rifles now come drilled and tapped for easy scope mount installation. Our H001 series lever action rifles do not require use of these mounts as the receivers are 3/8ths groove. The Golden Boy Scope and 1st generation Big Boy rifles are drilled an tapped under the rear sight. Current production (2nd generation) Big Boys are drilled and tapped on the top of the receiver. To determine which generation of Big Boy you have refer to the serial number table provided so you select the correct mount. Instructions on installation of the scope mounts is provided in the packaging. All Henry Scope Mounts accept Weaver style detachable 1" top mount rings.
In September 2011 we began shipping the 2nd generation Big Boy rifles which feature receivers that are drilled and tapped for the scope mount. In previous production 1st generation the barrels were drilled and tapped if rollmarked Bayonne NJ. First generation Big Boys use the BB-CSM Cantilever Scope Mount. 2nd generation current production use the new style BB-RSM Receiver Scope Mount. 2nd generation Big Boys start with the following serial numbers:
H006 = BB0047222
H006M = BB0015530M
H006C = BB0021188C
You should either have a Big Boy that has holes drilled and tapped under the rear sight for which you would use our BB-CSM barrel mounted scope mount, or the holes drilled and tapped on top of the receiver, which you would use our BB-RSM receiver scope mount. I think you have the version with holes in the barrel.
Sincerely,
Anthony Imperato, President

First time gun range shoot for Taylen, explaining how to handle the Ruger 96/44 mag safely. It was typical Texas weather about 110 degrees. He did very well for his first time at the range. He also shot a Winchester 190 22 lr, Browning Buckmark 22lr, Ruger Blackhawk 44 mag, TC Encore 270, Cmmg 223 Ar-15. Now he is hooked for life.

"A strong body makes the mind strong. As to the species of exercises, I advise the gun. While this gives moderate exercise to the body, it gives boldness, enterprise and independence to the mind. Games played with the ball, and others of that nature, are too violent for the body and stamp no character on the mind. Let your gun therefore be your constant companion of your walks." - Thomas Jefferson

Getting ready for chuck hunting
This was the last weekend to hunt squirrels, so I pulled the scope off the Henry H001T and was really pleased to discover that the scope and mount fit perfectly on the AR-7. More on my 2012 Hunting page.

Season is almost over
Only two more weekends to squirrel hunt this season. Get out there tomorrow, and good luck! By the way, did you remember to renew your hunting license Jan. 1st? It expired Dec. 31 in CT, and does not cover you through the end of Feb. as some people think. You might want to check.
Hunting checklist
Every time I get ready to hunt, there's a ton of things I need to pull together and I'm always trying not to forget something. That one thing I do manage to forget can really put a damper on things, so tonight as I readied for tomorrow's hunt, I decided to write things down as I pulled them together. This list may seem ridiculously large, but it really isn't. I carry a small, light backpack with a few things in my pocket and that's it. Everything is small and light and it's the little things that make the difference. Here goes...
Firearm
Gun case
Holster (when handgun is used)
Cell phone
Wallet / Money
Keys (car, house, etc)
Hunting License (not expired)
Camera w/ extra batteries (if you're like me)
Ammo
Backpack
Snack (Granola Bar)
Bottled Water
Hat / Stocking Cap (I carry both)
Blaze Jacket (or Camo Jacket w/ Blaze Vest)
Boots
Keys
Gloves (Winter and Fingerless Leather)
Medications (Allergy, etc)
First Aid Kit (small bag w/ band aids, etc)
Toilet Paper for Long Hunts
Emergency Poncho (those little plastic packets)
Stuff for Gutting:
Knife
Pliers
Garbage Bag
(2-3) 1 Gal Freezer Bags
Latex Gloves
Hand Wipes
Bug Spray (in Season)
Snow Shoes (in Season)
GPS (if required)
Feel free to add to this list in comments.

Bagged one today and gutted it in the field
Clarification: It didn't take 15 minutes to sneak up to the tree. I sat the tree out for 15 minutes, and right before I was about to quit, I went around the back side and spotted that squirrel flattened out on an upper branch.

Why I eat squirrel, really
THIS IS AN AWESOME ARTICLE!
"Some consider squirrel to be the best meat in the woods. Coming Soon: Crimson Trace Tests
Crimson Trace LaserGrips Report from the range: .38 Special
"Today I used Remington 38 Special ammo instead of the wad-cutters I used most of the time last weekend. I was amazed that one of my first shots landed a round in the red. Since it was noon and sunny, it wasn't easy to see the red dot. Even so, I did manage to land every round on these rather small targets. In fact, very often I'd land 2 or 3 shots in a row almost into the same hole!..." MORE
It's Almost a Miracle!
"...I didn't say 'It's a miracle!" without very good reason. For the entire time I've owned this S&W 38 Special, I haven't been able to hit the broad side of a barn with it. Of course every once in awhile I'd land a round on target, but it's the rare exception and not the rule. This week I installed a set of Crimson Trace Laser Grips and today was my first opportunity to try them out..." MORE

A Fisher Cat story from Rob Becher
Bob,
Here is a shot of a Fisher Cat in my yard 2 years ago.
Ya know when you hear crows screaming that somethings up so I looked outside and saw then following a Fisher that must have been messing with them. I grabbed my camera and joined in the chase treeing him. He was not happy w/me and kept going from tree to tree as I was attempting to take a picture of him. He had enough of me a headed back the way he came from when again the crows took over the chase. This was quite a day as just minutes before this event I had several of the local PD cars follow a Moose down my driveway. It was a cow with Cody walking next to it with the Cromwell PD Captain just behind her. I found out the next day that she a broken her leg when she got tangled in a swing set two streets away. DEP darted her and transported her to the NW part of the state where she died the next day due to her injury and mostly high heat as it was 90 degrees that day. When animals that large get darted in high heat they need to receive cold water enemas to keep the core temp low, that did not happen.
So, that Sunday was quite a day as I had never seen a Fisher Cat or a Moose in CT let alone Cromwell.*

First Look: NAA Sheriff .22LR / .22 Mag.
I just brought the little 6.5" revolver home from the gun shop and I'll give you my first impressions. Like the other .22 magnums I've shown on this page, the Sheriff is a very solid little gun. The rear sight is fixed and I'm very interested to know how accurate it is... MORE

Jim's wet hunt
Hi Bob
Wish I had a great and exciting story to tell you of the last little bit of deer hunting that went on here but, sad to say, I don't. No deer down from me. lol (personally, I don't really care). First two days, RAIN, not just rain, but POURING down rain. Sheesh. One good thing, my new hunting coat IS waterproof! My brush pants, well..... Had to take a garbage bag with me to cover my legs. Leaned my shotgun against the tree and had to put a leaf over the barrel to keep it from filling with water. Didn't see a deer all that week. Very few dead ones on cars and we were in the highest kill rate county of Ohio, Coshocton.
Came back home and still didn't find any. The water everywhere was amazing. Not that I didn't try, was out every day but....
Only got to hunt on the Sunday of the 'bonus' weekend. Was in a tree stand, guys were driving the thicket in front of me, and heard snap, crash, whoosh. TURKEYS came boiling outta there. What a neat thing to see. Had 'em flying around and under me. Must have been about 15 of them. As I was intent on watching them come out of there in ones and twos, was so neat to see them all around like that, the guys that were to my right, about 80 yrds, fired. Now, I'm paying attention! One doe, comes sneaking away from them towards me. Kewl, nice that she wasn't too spooked. She stopped, I had the gun on her, put the sights on her, bang. She just kept walking!! Think she was a bit farther than what I expected. How big are they when they look to be about _____ this big?! Not real good at judging yardage. Next thing in the hunting bag is a range finder! She never ran or spooked, just slinked back into the thick and kept going. Another guy to my left, maybe 100 yrds, didn't even see her. And this was all in very open woods. Meanwhile, the turkeys kept coming out!!!! I bet there was about 40 or so all told. Made my hunt right then. Saw the drivers come out on both sides and still saw a turkey sneak between them. Lesson to learn, the animals KNOW where YOU are, not the other way around. Always amazing to watch this happen. Have seen it many times before. Another lesson, know your yardage. This is something you can't be taught, just have to experience. I am always amazed when the animals I shoot at don't drop on the spot. It's like they didn't even put the projectile in the shell!!
Oh well, hands were still blood free and no dragging to be done. All in all, very good way to spend the morning! Muzzleloader coming up, Jan 7 thru 10. Gonna get out the Hawken and make sure it hits where I aim it! Never disappointed me yet but maybe I've dissapointed IT!

Hollywood shooting: Witness captures dramatic video of gunman
"William Wiles awoke to the sound of gunshots Friday morning in Hollywood. Wiles lives in an apartment overlooking the intersection of Sunset Boulevard and Vine Street and said he looked outside to see a young gunman in a white shirt firing randomly at cars. Wiles, a student at the Los Angeles Recording School, said he began recording video on his iPhone. A brief video... shows a man in the intersection firing a shot at a pickup truck..." WATCH THE VIDEO

BATFE Wanted Fast and Furious to Justify Gun Control
"...Someone within the BATFE or higher in the Department of Justice wanted the smuggled guns to be recovered at crime scenes in Mexico, and traced to sources within the U.S., so that the Obama Administration could claim a need for one or another gun control measure being pushed by anti-gun groups. Someone who values gun control more than the lives of innocent people killed by cartel operatives armed with the BATFE’s “walked” guns. Someone who believes, as one BATFE official put it, that “to make an omelet, you have to break some eggs...” MORE

This took place very close to where my sister lives. Hope this convinces her to carry her handgun more often. ~ Bob

'The Hunt' by Jim Drescher
Hi Bob
Just a note about the hunt this week so far. Went to Coshocton, Oh for first and second day. RAIN,RAIN, RAIN!! And this is the highest kill county in Ohio. Sheesh, saw some on cars but didn't see any in the woods. But did see TONS of HUGE gray squirrels. Never saw so many. One hill top, must have been 14 runnin around! That was a treat in itself. The getting soaked to the bone wasn't. Had good rain gear but when you push the fields, not much you can do.
Came home Tues afternoon and took a little walk Wed morning. Woods and all surrounding was almost flooded. Again, lots of sign but no animals. Did have two fox squirrels come so close I could have touched them with my gun barrel. That was fun. Amazing how quiet they can be. I believe it's mating season and you always see them in pairs now.
Then, it got cold and frosty. Pushed some little wood lots, saw fresh tracks but was so foggy you would have to have been right on top of them before you could see them. We knew they were there just didn't make contact.
Grandaughter's birthday party today in Akron so am gonna take today off to enjoy the festivities. (Forced to, actually) Tomorrow, will be back out there for one more day then back to work. Booooo!
So, the result is no deer yet. Still have two extra gun days and four muzzleloader days. Not real worried. If it's meant to be, it'll be. If not, won't have to do any skinning. That's the good part. Gonna have to buy some new shells tho. These ones are getting worn out putting them in the gun, take them out, put them back in, take them out so on and so forth!! The guns sure are getting some good wipedowns with all this moisture. I think they'll be doing some driving in the AM and will certainly be out for that. I KNOW they're driving deer today.
Can't wait to see the baby and the day should be fun anyway.
More stories to come.

A shoot with Joe Durkin
Joe and Joe at BCFG
Joe BCFG Big Boy .44
Joe BCFG Golden Boy .22
Hi Bob,
Saw your response post regarding the Skinner Sights I commented on Bob re: your blog site. Yea, it wouldn't make sense like you said filing the front sights down now during hunting season and then sighting them in. That's what I'm gonna do with my two Henry's most likely in the Spring as well. I'm going buck hunting this Saturday, Dec. 3rd and next Fri. the 9th and Sat. the 10th if needed. Hopefully I'll bag my first buck with the Big Boy. If so I'll send you a photo. I do have these photos of my son and me at the range I belong to in Doylestown, Bucks County, PA. They were taken in the early fall this year. Here's also a link to the BCFG Assn., the organization I belong too. Can't wait to get those peep sights on Bob. Hope they work with the factory front sights otherwise I'll have to get the Skinner's and a file. Take care Bob and have a Merry Christmas!Sincerely, Joe Durkin, Southampton, PA
